It's a good suggestion. But it's more important to figure out what is causing processor over-runs at the moment. If its not the issue, we'll expand it out again.

Yesterday the strain on the server was higher than it has been all month. So, threads per page isn't playing a significant role in this.

Also, some MySQL setting suggestions for the Sphinx system.
You can set the "max_matches" from the default 1000 to 500 and see if that has a huge impact without hurting user performance.

And what kind of error messages were/are you getting?
