POCl3 and alcohols
« on: August 07, 2008, 07:31:04 PM »
is the structure in the attachment possible...im pretty sure ive heard one of my proffessors say tht double bonds dont normally occur next to each other, but im not sure if tht applies to straight chains, he may have been talking about aromatics and resonance. so in the attachment, can it happen or is it atleast a major product? thanks

Double bonds absolutely occur next to each other.  It's the basis of conjugation.  Straight chain or in conjugation with aromatic rings.
