Vapor Pressur and which one evaporates faster
« on: August 14, 2008, 01:54:36 PM »
I was looking at this problem where they give 4 compounds with 4 different vapor pressures in torr at 25 degrees Celsius :

Compound 1 - 25
Compound 2 - 58
Compound 3 - 20
Compound 4 - 15

The question asks which one would evaporate the fastest at  30 degrees Celsius?

The answer: Compound 2 does.

I was reasoning this out, and I wondering is my thinking right about this:

Since Compound 2 has the highest VP (meaning it is also the most reactive), that it will burn the fastest. And, that low VP, like Compound 4, would require more time because the compound is much more stable.

The equilibrium VP is an indication of a liquid's evaporation rate. It relates to the tendency of gas molecules to escape from the liquid. A substance with a high VP at normal temperatures is often referred to as volatile.
