How do moving ions conduct electricity
« on: August 17, 2008, 05:53:47 AM »
Hello everyone,

I want to know how  ;D moving ions conduct electricty. How is the electricty transferred from positive charge to negative charge. Why are metals conductors? Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks   :)

Not quite sure what your question means but try

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrolysis - first paragraph of overview

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrical_conductor - as a result of typing the question "Why are metals conductors?" into google and opening the first entry in the list

Google answers your questions not me.

Thanks anyway Clivelong. The reason why I made this question was because I was confused with metals and ions conducting electricty. I was thinking metal as ions and really confused myself.

Now I understand after some research

In metals there are delocalised ions which are able to conduct electrictity. All though these electrons are not really bound to the nucleus of the atom they are still not lost so metals are not ions. So Na is a metal not Na+

For ions I finally worked it out. Answer is ELECTROLYSIS

School is going to teach this. So hopefully my problems are solved.  ;D

Excellent. Well done.  ;D

I think I now see what your confusion was.

1) Metals conduct electricity by movement of delocalised electrons under influence of applied voltage

2) Sodium metal forms sodium ions by loss of electrons to form Na+

so you thought applying a voltage to a metal must produce Na+ ions

Interesting idea, wrong, but I'm not sure how to argue that it is wrong !!! :)
