Carbon Monoxide
« on: September 15, 2008, 06:39:38 AM »
Hello,everyone,

For example, sigma bond is the head-to-head overlapping of two electrons , pi bond is the side-way overlapping of electrons, how about dative bond? Is it the head-to-head overlapping of 2Pz orbital of oxygen and 1s orbital of C?

For your information, there are two normal covalent bond and one dative bond between CO.

The $$ P_z /$$ orbitals in $$ CO /$$ contain a lone pair, they are not involved in dative bonding with itself. If you're assuming the z-axis is along the highest symmetric axis.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
