Finding salt concentrations, urgent :|
« on: September 16, 2008, 04:06:20 PM »
Well.. My AP Chem teacher is making us write our own labs and procedures.

We have to find out which of 2 sand samples has a higher salt concentrations, we have pretty standard highschool chem lab equipment, and ill have about an hour to run a few trials.

Sadly im not really sure how to do this. Any suggestions on how I could find out which of the 2 samples of sand has a higher salt concentration?

PS if you wanted to be really cool you could put your idea in a hypothesis form for me, i suck at making those too.. :P

2*weight, water and drying.

...? um no i mean i need a way to find the salt concentration of each test tube of sand.

One idea i had, could i put an exact amount of warm water into each test tube, shake the test tube so salt dissolves, then pour the water through filter paper to get rid of sand. Then ... how would i find how much salt in the water...

That's exactly what I was referring to. You have to weight before and after to find the answer (don't forget to dry it thoroughly). Alternatively, you may try to measure volume of the sand/salt mixture.
