Halogenation question
« on: October 06, 2008, 11:10:02 PM »
When methane is allowed to react with an equamolar mixture of chlorine and bromine.

ONLY hydrogen abstraction by chlorine atoms is observed... because?

I think it's because chlorine has higher electronegative than bromine.

Please correct me.

Look at the trends in bond dissociation energy for the halogens, especially BDE's for hydrogen-halogen bonds.  That should explain it.
