Isoelectric point of amino acids

According to my notes, in order to calculate the isoelectric point of a acidic amino acid the equation is:

pi = 1/2 (pka cooh + pkaR)

Is the R a variable r group or some specific functional group? ester perhaps?

Each of the physiological amino acids has a different R group.  It's attached to the chiral carbon, that also has the amino, the carboxlyic and another hydrogen.  With the notable exception of proline, the imino, amino acid. ;D
