E1 Elimination and Hydride/Alkyl Shifts
« on: November 25, 2008, 06:48:28 PM »
Do you have to consider hydride/alkyl shifts in E1 eliminations?  Both processes are intramolecular, so not sure =/

As a blanket example, I would say yes.  It depends as well on what structure you get after the shift, how stable, etc.

Apparently E1 isn't intramolecular; you do need some sort of weak base to pull off the proton.  (so yea, you do need to consider potential hydride shifts).  Thanks.
