Dimerization of benzoic acid
« on: November 26, 2008, 02:56:31 PM »
Hi, quick question:

the theoretical molar mass of benzoic acid is 122.12 g/mol. But when trying to figure out the molar mass experimentally I got 210g/mol. I know this is becuase based on the molecular formula of benzoic acid, in the nonpolar solvent(benzene), the molecules of benzoic acid can dimerize.

So my question is, can this same reason explain why when trying to find the molar mass of menthol experimentally, I got a higher number than the actual molar mass which is 156.27g/mol? Or is there some other explanation?

thanks
