What is the OXIDIZING AGENT in the following reaction?

3H2S+2HNO3-->3S+2NO+4H20

a) H2S

b) HNO3

c) S

Can you assign oxidation states to each of the elements in the reaction?

S -2
NO-1
H2O+1

Close, but assign oxidation states for each element in every single compound, so something like this:

H2S...
H:
S:

HNO3...
H:
N:
O:

etc...

oh ok. Thank you. So the oxidizing agent would be H2S because S-2 increases to S(0) in S right?

Not quite, what is the definition of an oxidizing agent?  Does it take or give electrons in the process?  If it gives electrons, will oxidation increase or decrease?  Which element fits these criteria?

The oxidizing agent is the reactant that contains the element reduced.
The N is going from an oxidation state of +5 in HNO3 to an oxidation state of +2 in NO. SO, each N atom is gaining 3 electrons.

So what is your oxidizing agent then?

NO?
Close, that is the product of the redox reaction.  What is the compound that provides the element that is oxidized on the reactants side?

HNO3 is my final answer. If I don't get this right I don't understand the problem and will ask my teacher.
