Help with quantum numbers
« on: December 08, 2008, 04:30:56 PM »
It says

Give the quantum numbers for the nine electrons in the ground state of the fluorine atom

Then it gives me a table:

electron       1          2      3      4.....all the way down to 9
n
l
m or ml
s or ms

I have to fill out the table. I know what n and l are but how do you get them here? I'm not sure what m/ml and s/ms even are though.

Dear toadesque;

You may study as an example:   http://www.rwc.uc.edu/koehler/biophys/6b.html

Then you may start to fill the table and show us where you got in trouble.
We then try to help you.
I start the table for you with the first electron, which is identical with the configuration of H:

electron:   1        2        3   …..
n:             1        ...
l:              0        ...
ml:            0        ...
ms:        +1/2      .

May you try to continue?

Good Luck!
