KMnO4 Oxidation Plz *delete me*
« on: May 03, 2005, 07:00:06 PM »
Okay,

1-butanol and KMnO4

what does this produce? I was thinking...

1-butanol + 2KMnO4
--------------->
CH3CH2CH2CHO + 2MnO3 + 2KOH

or
2(1-butanol) + KMnO4
---------------->
2(CH3CH2CH2CHO) + MnO2 + 2HOH + K

What is the answer?

I have a lab due tomorrow and i mixed a small amount of KMnO4 with 1-butanol to produce a green color. I assume an aldehyde is produced, since I had much more alcohol than KMnO4! If you think this green shows i produced an acid, please show the reaction with KMnO4 that produces an acid.

I also need the reaction of 2-butanol with KMnO4
when I mixed the KMnO4 with 2-butanol (a secondary alcohol) i got a red color! Please *delete me*!!

When reaction start
3C4H10O + 2KMnO4 = C4H8O + 2MnO2(s) + 2KOH + 2H2O

When solution become enough alkaline
C4H10O + 2KMnO4 + 2KOH = C4H8O + K2MnO4 + 2H2O
The above reaction can be accompanied by
2KMnO4 + MnO2(s) + 4KOH = 3K2MnO4 + 2H2O
and solution will become green and clear.

(MnO2 is blackish-brown solid, K2MnO4 is green and soluble in water)
