Isolation of copper from cuprous chloride
« on: February 04, 2009, 09:28:08 PM »
I am attempting to create a ppt of copper from separate samples of CuCl and CuCl2, in order to eventually prove their respective empirical formulas. Since cupric chloride is soluble in water, it is simple enough to dissolve it, and add Mg or Al to precipitate the copper, then filter.
However, CuCl is not soluble in water. I know is there is a straightforward way to separate the copper, but I can't seem to find it. Ideas?

Fe3+ will dissolve CuCl oxidizing copper.

Magnesium will react with the water before reacting with aqueous CuCl2. The same can be said about Aluminium, but real aluminium is covered by a protective layer of Al2O3, so I doubt you can use it to displace Copper. You can use metals less reactive than Al or Mg to do the job, such as Iron powder.
