Distinguish 4-bromophenol from 4-bromoaniline
« on: February 18, 2009, 03:28:32 PM »
Hello everyone.

I have to distinguish an unknown substance and I narrowed it down to 4-bromophenol and 4-bromoaniline( they have the same melting point). Could anyone suggest how to distinguish them? 4-bromophenol is an organic acid and 4-bromoaniline is a base so maybe by neutralization reactions? Any other suggestions? Specify the materials needed if you can.

Dear Mykolas;

Dissolve them in Ether and extract with water of acidic or/and basic nature.
With this method you can separate them – and also distinguish both.

Acidic water  =  ~5% HCl.
Basic  water  =  ~5% NaOH

I hope to have been of help to you.
Good Luck!

Although they can have the same melting point there is still a way to distinguish the two compound from each other , perhaps you can neutral Fecl3 ,that is yellow in colour ,when added to 4bromophenol , it would show a change in colour from yellow to violet when water is added When added to 4bromoaniline , there would be no colour change

maybe u can first convert aniline to diazonium ion by NaNO2 / HCl   then add naphthalen-2-ol to form a diazo compound with a characteristic orange colour
