Dilution vs. Standardization
« on: March 15, 2009, 11:17:28 AM »
What does it mean to calculate the NaOH concentration by the dilution method where as calculating the molar concentration by standardization?

This is a titration lab, and I the things I know are the Mass of the KHP, which is what we titrated, the initial and final volumes and the total volume of NaOH added to the KHP solution.

Am i right that the dilution method is the mass of NaOH/MolarMass (4.11/40).

I really don't recognize the jargon they've given you, but it seems to me that your instincts are probably correct.  The question is, can you do it both ways, and see if you get a difference?  It's important to realize that you might get slightly (or maybe very,) different values.  That's why they've asked you to do it both ways, and have to give each way a term.  The "dilution method" doesn't seem to be one that I'd heard of.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
