Acidic MnO4- solution reacts with ethanol, CH3CH2OH, to produce acetic acid, CH3COOH.
I have to write a balanced equation, and this is what I have figured out thus far.
I am having a real issue sometimes with balancing, so would someone people review my work, and tell me if I am correct?
CH3CH2OH + MnO4- ----------> CH3CHOOH + MnO2 + OH-
In reviewing I can see that all the C, H, Mn, O are balanced on both sides.
However what about the charges?
do both sides simply have a -1 charge? Is it therefore equal or do I have to get each side to 0?
I am so grateful for your help.
