Qualitative analysis of cations
« on: March 23, 2009, 01:21:30 PM »
These questions are from my lab today, I have no idea what they asking. any help is greatly apperaited

1) Why does CdS dissolve in HCl, when CuS and Bi2S3 will not?

2) How does the addition of Aqueous NH3 to a solution separate and idenity Cu2+ and BBi3+ ions? Why wouldn't the addition of a strong base, such as KOH, work just as well as the addition of aqueous NH3?

..maybe NH3 can react with Cu2+??

Yes, your lab book may have the specific reaction for you, you may need it for other cations, on later steps or the exam, so you should look it up.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
