Where to buy melting point discs?
« on: March 29, 2009, 03:56:14 PM »
Sadly, my school is broke and we're running extremely short on melting point discs.  Please let me know if you know where I can buy some of these on my own.

I wouldn't mind if you told me where to get good prices on glassware too.  I tend to break things.  :-[

Thanks for any and all help you can provide.

Well, I'm intrigued, what is a "melting point disc'?  A Google search doesn't turn up anything I'd recognize as applicable to lab work.  Who manufactures them?  And what do they do?
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

It's kind of like DSC, except much more rudimentary.  We use 3/4" diameter glass discs with a small organic sample and heat it to observe its melting point range.  I don't know the brand/model of the discs we're using.  I have the empty case in my locker at school.  Obviously I can find out tomorrow, and I'm sure a brand and model # will make it super easy to find online.

We use those discs like we also use these tubes:

I would use the tubes if our techs knew how to calibrate the melting point devices.  You know something is wrong when the apparatus says room temperature is 5° C.

I assume you're talking about coverslips for a Fisher-Johns mp apparatus. We buy ours from Fisher Scientific (P.N. 12-546)

Squirmy, that looks like what we use.  Wow, it's a lot more expensive than I was hoping for, but I'll have to order those if I break any more of the discs in my locker.
