Not a chemist, need some advice please
« on: April 16, 2009, 08:12:00 AM »
Hello, I am a dental technician and am wanting to recreate some of the materials we use everyday.  I have done my research from the manufacturer's and am ready to make my first endeavor. It is 'modeling liquid' which is used as the binding liquid that holds the porcelain granules together before they sinter in the furnace, they burn out of the glass matrix(hopefully, as the oven goes from 420C to 500C)before it starts to vitrify(depending on the porc., somewhere between 760C and 940C) and leaves the porcelain porosity free. Its major components are a starchy rice water, butandiol, and ethyl vanillin.  Below are the Wikipedia links to two chemicals.  My question for the board is, is there something I should be aware of mixing these, the order in which i do it?  I ordered very small amounts of these to experiment with and was surprised to see that the ethyl vanillin was a powder, how should I safely dissolve this? Are there any real health and safety concerns, i read the msds, but it seems very generalized for each of them.  Please any help would be super greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Paul

These look to me like safe - I mean, no problem with mixing order, no problem with possible reactions, no toxic risks. As usual, typical lab caution won't hurt.

It doesn't mean mixing order doesn't matter - could be it is easier to do it one way than another.

Thank you for that confirmation, that makes me feel better!

Any suggestions, It's been 20 years or so since my college chem class... I don't remember too much of it, unfortunately...  Would mixing it one way or another alter it's usability? or make more or less effective?

No idea. That's what you will have to try by yourself. What I wrote was just to signal possibility, I had nothing particular on mind.
