Help with writing & balancing an equation?
« on: April 14, 2009, 01:30:49 PM »
Hi,

I have to write a balanced equation between stomach acid and an antacid. The antacid I'm using consists of Aluminum Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide.

So far, I have:

3HCl + Al(OH)3  :rarrow: AlCl3 + 3H2O
2HCl + MgCl2  :rarrow: MgCl2 + H2O

Did I write and balance these equations correctly? I have a feeling I wrote the equation on the left for Magnesium Hydroxide incorrectly. Please let me know, thanks!

2HCl + MgCl2

This is not hydrochloric acid mixed with magnesium hydroxide.

Is it...:

2HCl + MgOH2  :rarrow: MgCl2 + H2O ?

Better, but still wrong. This time mistake is so obvious, you will hate yourself once you will find out what you did ;)

You have still problems with magnesium hydroxide.

Hmmm... do the parenthesis matter? Also, did I forget the 2 in front of H2O?

2HCl + Mg(OH)2  :rarrow: MgCl2 + 2H2O ?

You are not sure? I should pretend I am fainting >:(

Yes, they do.

MgOH2 means one atom of Mg, one of O and two of H.

Mg(OH)2 means one atom of Mg, two of O and two of H.

OK.
