Simple problem involving heat that I can't figure out.
« on: February 08, 2009, 07:22:50 PM »
How much heat (in kilojoues) is needed to convert 866g of ice at -10C to steam at 126C? (The specific heats of ice and steam are 2.03J/g*C and 1.99 J/g*C, respectively.

The answer is 2670 kJ. It doesn't explain the answer at all. The only equations I'm provided are Hess's Law and the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. Simply put, I can't figure out how to apply either here.

Even after looking at this I have no idea where to go. The book doesn't contain an explanation of a problem like this, and I completely fail to see how to apply either of the equations provided on this problem.

Dear pantsaregood;

Calculate all Heat’s stepwise and finally summarise them!

Use the following recipe combined with the links I gave you:
    A.)      Heat the Ice from -10°C to 0°C.
    B.)      Melt the Ice to water of 0°C.
    C.)      Heat the water to 100°C.
    D.)      Convert the water to steam of 100°C
    E.)      Heat now the steam to 126°C
    F.)      Summaries all calculated Heat’s together.

I hope you know the basic formula of heat.
Good Luck!
