what 4 properties of matter would you consider in water displacement or in general? (what first 4 just come to mind?)

I can think of two: Volume (how much water it displaces) and Density (sinks or floats).

Does it absorb water (like baby powder). I don't know if that is useful to you.

No does it absorb water not does it is it a solute in water. Some substances absorb water. Get baby powder. Would you consider it a solution. I wouldn't. It forms an intresting goopy stuff that holds water.

Solubility is another property though.

is it like an anhydrous substance becoming hydrated, eg. CuSO4.H2O crystals?

Viscosity is DEFINITELY a factor when displacement is involved...possibly surface tension...?

Viscosity would determine surface tension I'd imagine. Also it'd determine what would happen when you put it in water would it begin to seperate and diffuse in the water quickly or would it hold together in a blob.
