hi guys.... we are working on design project of producing commercial Oxalic acid. we searched for its raw materials and found molasses,sugar beet,glycol,coal chemicals,sodium formate,nitrogen oxides, CO and NaOH.
      Please share your knowledge about this project. which raw material should we use? (on economical basis and availability) Moreover please tell us some well known industries producing Oxalic acid in your area.

Hello Zahid and fellows,

One inexpensive method to produce oxalic acid is

"Oxalic acid is usually prepared by heating sodium formate with sodium hydroxide to form sodium oxalate, which is converted to calcium oxalate and treated with sulfuric acid to obtain free oxalic acid." http://www.encyclopedia.com/topic/oxalic_acid.aspx

What other feedstock other than 'nitrogen oxides'?  You are missing carbon here...

Historical synth sucrose + HNO3 giving massive nitric oxides as byproduct...

CO +NaOH under pressure is the modern way.

Or if you want a tasty treat as a byproduct you could extract it from rhubarb leaves.

sory for very late reply sir.... we were busy in examination.
yes, we have studied this raw material.but the problem is that sodium formate causes environmental pollution and we are intended to desgin an "almost pollution free" plant  :)
