Reaction Quotient (Q) vs. Equillibrium Constant (K)?

I'm confused as to the difference between these. I know that the reaction quotient is suppose to determine which way the reaction will sway - towards the reactants versus products, but they both use the same equation, products over reactants with their respective coefficients. How are you suppose to determine the two different values? Can you give me an example? Thanks!

When reaction is at equilibrium reaction quotient equals K. When reaction is not at equilibrium it will proceed till it gets to equilibrium. Thus knowing Q you can tell if the reaction is at equilibrium and what direction it will proceed.
