Hi,

I've ordered a battery about a month ago from what looks like a reliable ebay store in the US.
The battery is a Li-on Replacement battery for NP-FH100, suitable for Digital Video Cameras.

It arrived to the local post office and has been there for about a week. (They forgot to send me a notice)
After another week, when I arrived to the post office to ask about the package, they said that it burned!

They said that smoke came out of my package, they panicked and called the police who took it for examination.
I received the package and indeed the battery has been burned inside.

My question is, how could a sealed, unused and uncharged battery burn just like that without being touched? It's been stored in a dry place away from the sun.

It's been shipped to me by USPS via air mail. Could this be a result of negligent packaging that may have not protected the battery sufficiently during its shipment?

Likely poor insulation leading to a short and resultant heating.
