A box of chocolates is always a safe gift.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

A glass LSD molecule. Watch the reaction when he/she figures out what it represents, and the implications of such.

On a more serious note I'd go with a box of chocolates. Maybe a signed card or something. It is the safe way to go for sure.

Just an additional suggestion, if u looking to get mug as a gift, you can make it unique, such as print some special logo or name to mug.

I always wanted to get the warning sign but could not bring myself to spend $25 on a novelty item that serves absolutely no purpose :P.

I especially like their new cocktail chemistry set (http://www.thinkgeek.com/homeoffice/mugs/b3b9/), but I guess that's only funny if your advisor enjoys a good stiff drink.

edit: Nevermind... I just realized how old this post is. You've probably already long left your advisor.
