How do water softners work with hard water to make it soft water?

Hard water is "hard" due to the present of Ca2+ or Mg2+ ion.
To make it soft, we just add another counter anion to the hard water, which will form a ppt. with Ca2+ or Mg2+
as a result, the con. of Ca2+ and Mg2+ is lowered and thus, soften.
