atomic weight percents
« on: August 06, 2009, 07:35:53 PM »
Q. A soda-lime glass has a molar composition of 8% Na2O, 6% Ca2O and 86% SiO2. Find the atomic and weight percents of the various elements.

A. Na20 = 62, Ca2O = 96, SiO2 = 60

Na2O = 8x1/62 = 0.13
Ca2O = 6x1/96 = 0.06
SiO2 = 86x1/60 = 1.43

0.13+0.06+1.43 = 1.62

Na2O = 0.13/1.62x100 = 8.02%
Ca2O = 0.06/1.62x100 = 3.70%
SiO2 = 1.43/1.62x100 = 88.27%

                                   99.9%

Is this correct?

Hmm... I don't understand: Ca2O stands for CaO2?

I guess its still calcuim oxide but with 2 atoms. Ca2o

Element   Symbol   Atomic Mass   # of Atoms

Calcium      Ca         40.078             2        = an atomic mass of 80
Oxygen        O         15.9994           1

Are my calculations correct?

You can first assume the composite is 100 mole, and Na2O is 8 mole,Ca2O? is 6 mole, SiO2 is 86 mole. Then you calculate the mass of the composite and ingredients to find the answer.
