Apparently I do this in an old-fashioned way, ie typing out every time I reference something. I was recently informed of reference management software. Do many here use such software, or do others, like me, simply do everything manually?

I like Zotero. It's free, open source, and works out of the box.
Industry standards are usually EndNote or RefWorks. Both for pay, unless your university has a subscription.
