Greetings! We began discussing IUPAC nomenclature of alkanes in class today, and my professor put a compound on the board for us to consider. I am completely stuck trying to figure out it's name.
The closest I can come up with based on what I currently know is
1-methyl-1-pentylcyclopentane, but the cyclopentane isn't the longest chain. The longest chain seems to be a heptane, but then what sort of attachment is that at the #2 carbon?
If it were this:
Then I would call it
2-cyclopentylheptane, but I have no idea what to do when the ring is attached like in the first picture. Am I anywhere close?
