Drawing a structure from a formula
« on: September 23, 2009, 02:35:50 PM »
I'm apparently lacking some basic understanding here.  Which molecule is correct, and why?

Not necessarily. A methoxy group should be written as (OCH3), with the oxygen listed first to indicate it's attachment to the tertiary carbon. The hydroxymethyl group should be written as (CH2OH). However, it is neither. I would ask for clarification.

Problem is, question is ambiguous. I would never use the formula provided, as it is not clear what structure it refers to.
