How to detect Si(CH3)4?
« on: September 24, 2009, 11:23:19 PM »
Is there any easy technique to detect Si(CH3)4 other than FTIR and NMR?

I don't know about easy, but..

When running GC/MS, I could detect Si(CH3)4.  There were potential problems.  The major one was the column.  A polydimethy-l or polyphenylmethyl- siloxane coated column will start to break down, especially if held at high temps during the analysis cycle (300 C or higher).  You will see some level of Si(CH3)4 from that alone.

The level of Si(CH3)4 detected was higher than the background noise from the column breakdown (the analysis was of polymeric LIM silicone mixtures).  But using a different column, without the interferences, would help.
