Can you tell me if I am correct? Thank you so much!!!!!!


Which of the following are true about the correct Lewis structure of the SeF2 molecule ?

a)   The structure has 20 valence electrons.
b)   One of the F atoms would be the central atom as it has a greater number of valence electrons than an Se atom.

c)   Only the Se atom has an octet of electrons.
d)   Although there are different ways to draw the structure, only one is correct.

I don't think you are correct.

a) How many valence electrons:
- each of the two F has 6 non-bonding electrons
- the Se has 4 non-bonding electrons
- there are 4 electrons used to make the two bonds Se-F
If you add up, how many do you have?

b) I agree with you

c) Do the fluorine atoms have octet of electrons?
The valence electronic configuration of F is 2s2 2p5: 7 electrons. When bonding with Se, it has access to an extra electron coming from Se: 8 electrons in total. They do.

d) I agree
