I would like some help verifying a method to determine the percentage by volume of HCl acid in a acid pickle tank. The method we are using appears to be wrong, but since my chemistry experience is limited, I was hoping to get a second opinion.
Given that HCl + NaOH ---> NaCl + H2O, and that the Normality of HCl times the mL of HCl equals Normality of NaOH times the mL of NaOH, I solved for the Normality of HCl acid.
N(HCl)*2mL(HCl)=0.5N(NaOH)*13.2mL(NaOH)
Normality HCl is 3.3.
which is also 3.3 Molar, which is also 3.3 mols/L.
So, 3.3 mols/L * 36.5 g/mol(HCl) = 120.45 g/L.
This would mean that the solution contained 12.05% by weight HCl.
Then I divided by the density of HCl, 1.49 to get 8.1% by volume.
Finally, since they want to know how much 37% HCl is in the tank, I divided by 37% to get an answer of 21.89% Of 37%HCl in the tank.
