volumetric calculation

what volume of sulphuric acid containing 0.2 mol dm3 is required to neutralise completely 20 cm3 of a solution of potassium hydroxide containing 0.5 dm3?

20x 0.5 = 10 moles


i am not sure if this is correct however i know it is a 1:2 reaction so I assumed:

5/0.2 = 25cm3 H2SO4


Please see if this is correct

OMG, we have not answered in one hour. Instead of watching TV and drinking beer as most normal people do on Sunday evening, I should sit by my computer to help all those that procrastinated doing their homework till the last moment. What a shame.

10 moles is absurd. No idea what solution of potassium hydroxide containing 0.5 dm3 is. No idea what solution sulphuric acid containing 0.2 mol dm3 is. I suppose these numbers are somehow realted to concentration, but I have never seen such units.

But its not correct for the question as written because in your haste to get help you did not write the question out correctly.

If you had written

"what volume of sulphuric acid containing 0.2 mol/dm3 is required to neutralise completely 20 cm3 of a solution of potassium hydroxide containing 0.5 mol/dm3?

20/1000 x 0.5  = 0.01 moles


I know it is a 1:2 reaction so I assumed:

(0.01/2)*1000/0.2 = 25cm3 H2SO4"

Then you would have been correct and someone, Borek most likely, would have told you so.  Yes you got the correct numeric answer your way but more by luck than judgement.
