How To Clean Iron?
« on: February 14, 2007, 11:15:21 AM »
I purchased a fairly pure chunk of iron and some surfaces are pretty shiny whilst others need a deblacking.

Searching the net brings up some household hints.... for irons and other rubbish.

Am thinking of some strong alkali and then storage in an airtight container with a silicate sack to get the water out of the way.

Ideas?

Cheers,

Adam
If it goes pop, OK.
If it goes KABOOM, better.

I have heard of abrading the surface to get a nice shiny polish.

It would probably be the most cost efficent and easiest to just polish it. You can get a steel polishing bit set that will fit in any basic cheap drill.

That of course, has nothing to do with chemistry.

Thanks guys. :)

When you say, "polish" what exactly do you mean? Do I use any chemicals or just go abrasive?

Cheers,

Adam

They mean abrasive.

Do you know what is purity of your iron?

Thanks. Just had a heavy scour and the dark bit won't shine up.

Will hand it to the tech boys at work.

It's pretty impure at a minimum of 98.28% Fe.

But will do as a sample for the kids :)
