Proton condition equation question.
« on: November 26, 2009, 07:01:11 AM »
Greetings

Looking over some past coursework for my course i came about a question asking to derive an appropriate proton condition equation for a solution of maleic acid, then from this to use a graph, log over ph (have a spreadsheet set that gives the graph) to identify the point where the proton condition equation is satisfied.

I'm not really sure as to how to go around this. I know that maleic acid is a diprotic acid and as such have found the proton condition equation [H+] = [HA–] + 2[A2–] + [OH–]. However not really sure as to the steps to derive this equation or to use it to discover the crossover point on the graph.

Any help is much appreciated
