Diels-Alder reaction?
« on: December 01, 2009, 11:24:28 PM »
Hi, I'm having trouble understanding this Diels-Alder reaction. (pg 492 of McMurry Organic Chemistry)

I think I understand, but that methyl group is throwing me off  ???

I have no idea where that methyl is coming from either.  Might be an error in the book?

Since that is a pet peeve of mine, I would say definitely an error. The first line of reasonableness is that the number of atoms must match between starting materials and products, this clearly does not.
