Function of MeOH in reducing ketone to alcohol with NaBH4
« on: December 07, 2009, 12:53:34 PM »
Hi!

I reduced a ketone to an alcohol with NaBH4. I thought that methanol was just the solvent, but it seems it has more of a function than that. Also, I put Ce(III)Cl3 in the pot. What is the function of Ce(III) chloride?

Thanks!

Oh! I did this reaction recently! =)
It's a Luche reduction.

Everything you need to know is available here:

and their article:
