hydrolisis of nitriles
« on: January 05, 2010, 11:28:05 AM »
hello my name is migueldario i am chemical engineering student from Venezuela

my question is this:

in the books I have found that the hydrolysis of nitriles occurs in acid medium or basic medium and high temperatures but my question is about neutral pH (pH:7) at room temperature the hydrolysis occurs slowly or no reaction at all?

I need to know because I am preparing a copolymer containing acrylonitrile which, once synthesized will be used in contact with water of about neutral pH and room temperature

if the cyano groups in the copolymer was hydrolyzed in contact with water would change the material properties and probably would not work for what I need

sorry for my english!

Nitriles will hydrolyze in very acidic or very basic conditions, but should be very stable at a neutral pH in water, especially in a bulk material.  Hope this helps,
