In regards to electron configuration: Can you do the electron notation by just looking at the atomic number and assuming the same number of electrons per a proton? There are periodic table that shows the electron configuration sub-levels. I noticed that some of the sub levels do not max out before moving on to a new level. Its very confusing... maybe im interpreting this wrong

Correct me if im wrong: but there will be an electron to match every proton within an element. Unless the element has ionic properties. Also if all elements make a stable octet that would assume a max of 8 electrons in the outer shell. This contradicts sub levels d (e-10) and (f-14)

Ah yes, I remember this well.  I always wondered in highschool why they told me every atom has 8 valence electrons, when in another text it would say, the n=3 can hold 18 electrons.  HOW THE F?  It still confuses me to this day...sort of. 

Electron configurations are a bit confusing, know this, don't believe that 8 valence electron bulls&$#.  I have just spent 15 minutes trying to find a periodic table with electron configurations and have not found one after 30 google image searches
Once you see one you will understand.  At times, the d orbital energy is so close to the next s orbital energy that d is filled before s.  I"m trying to find you an example, but google sucks

I appreciate the help... im just having a hard time conceptually wrapping my mind around it from my distant high school class.

Im trying to test out of the intro college chemistry. I got 17 out of 25 right on the last test out test. I need more than 20 to test out of chem 101

Stoichiometry and the conversion math is no problem. My problem was with simple naming of elements and how many valence electron type questions. Easy memorization for a clean test out on the second go around
