ethanoic acid mass (acetic acid)
« on: February 07, 2010, 10:34:29 PM »
hey umm i have a problem my end of year project is to extract ehanoic acid from vinegar
i am doing this through solvent extraction and then freeing the vinegar from the solvent.
i thought of distilation for this but n-butanol and ethanoic acid have the same boiling point practically is there a way i can lower or raise the boiling point of either or is there a way i can precipitate out the ethanoic acid ive done a lot of research and now i am struggling with this problem.
i am doing this as an alternative to titration to get more marks..

You could try two extractions at different pH to move the acetic acid from aqueous phase to organic and then back (to a different aqueous solution of course).

Why did you choose butanol?
