I'm confused on these buffer solutions.
Let's say that I have a solution prepared to be initially 0.5 M in CH
3COOH and 1 M in CH
3COONa.
Apparently, this is supposed to produce a buffer solution with a pH between 4 and 7. But I'm not getting where (a) the acidic part comes from and (b) why this produces a buffer solution. Thanks to anyone who can help.
