Why does this produce a buffer solution?

I'm confused on these buffer solutions.

Let's say that I have a solution prepared to be initially 0.5 M in CH3COOH and 1 M in CH3COONa.

Apparently, this is supposed to produce a buffer solution with a pH between 4 and 7. But I'm not getting where (a) the acidic part comes from and (b) why this produces a buffer solution. Thanks to anyone who can help. :)

No idea what are asking about.

What is buffer definition?

A buffer's formed by a weak acid and its conjugate base or a weak base and its conjugate acid.

I'm not sure why this is a buffer solution though. I see an acid but also a salt.
