My email signature states that I work at a prestigious medical research institute - not academia. Being a newly appointed postdoc - I completely understand from previous experience in grad school that custom synthesis can be expensive and that kg quantities are often quoted on Sci-Finder. But, when the information states to contact the supplier for the price then there is no indication that the company does not supply smaller quantities - unless one were to infer that the reason the price is not quoted is because it's too expensive for the average synthetic chemist to purchase. Mr. X. should have simply stated up front that either they did not have the resources to supply it or that they only sold it in kg quantities. I already have a good relationship with big pharma and I WILL remember this. Not that it will matter, I'm sure one of my MS-carrying subordinates will know how to run a Heck reaction.
