I would recommend just buying a toluene based paint thinner.
If you really wanted to make it, you could use benzene, methyl chloride, and AlCl3. It's a fairly easy addition. Check it out on wikipedia's "Toluene" page.

Toluene is cheap and available... wouldn't mess around w/ an alkylation of benzene:
