UV Spectroscopy
« on: April 26, 2010, 12:35:45 PM »
I am trying to figure out the UV absorption for the attached molecule in ethanol.

I know there is no correction for ethanol and the base is 195 nm for alpha, beta unsaturated carboxylic acids. I added 30 nm for extended conjugation, 10 nm for an alpha substituent and 12 nm for a beta substituent totaling 247 nm. What I am wondering is do I need to take into account the carbonyl on the ring and add in the value for an exocyclic double bond?? I was thinking not because the carbonyl isn't part of the conjugated system but I am unsure.. Please *delete me*

Thanks!
