Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Polymers

When studying thermal degradation of polymers using DSC, why do we see exothermic peaks under air and endothermic peaks under nitrogen?  Also, why would larger sample sizes be used for non-oxidative analysis and smaller sizes for oxidative?
