I am working on a research proposal on studying ion pairs in heterolysis reactions.  Among heterolysis reactions like S_N1 and E1, I came across the "F1" reaction.  It is mentioned several times but I can't find out what it is anywhere.  Does anyone know what  the products of it are (I am assuming it goes through a carbocation intermediate).  I have never heard of it until now.

hmmm, I have to say I am not familiar with that either, Anslyn and Dougherty doesn't even have it listed.  Is there a specific reference you can give us that mentions this type of reaction?

G.F. Dvorko et. al. J. Phys. Org. Chem. 2004; 17: 825 is one place I saw it.  It is just mentioned in the introduction as an example of unimolecular heterolysis.  I looked in at least two phys. org books and googled it.  I came up with nothing.  It has no connection to my proposal but I seen it enough to wonder what it is.  Must be pretty obscure if wikipedia doesn't even have it.
