Need help with molecular orbital model for HF
« on: April 21, 2010, 06:58:13 AM »
I am wondering why we use a molecular orbital model for HF if HF is an ionic compound.  We are taught that we have "electron transfer" for ionic compounds.  Do these two ideas agree.  What about if an ionic compound is dissociated into ions, is a molecular orbital treatment still appropriate?  Any help appreciated, thanks    -Famfeld

Technically, you can use MO theory for any compound, simply because no compound is 100% ionic.

'HF is an ionic compound' is a statement that holds true when you are in the early years of high school and later becomes approximate.

Can you elaborate on this, perhaps give me some recommended readings without being condescending.

Look at any intro inorganic book. I would recommend Housecroft.

Another good text to refer to is 'Concepts and Models of Inorganic Chemistry' by Douglas and McDaniel. (Wiley)
Read Chapter 4 - Discrete Molecules : Molecular Orbitals.
